"My hands know a lot. Touch makes a difference to this and that. Dangling things and seeing what they do. Mostly I just start with whatever's around."
Sarah Lucas, 2012
Sadie Coles HQ, in partnership with Koenig Books, is delighted to announce the publication of After 2005 - Before 2012, a major book surveying the work of Sarah Lucas over six prolific years.
Embossed with a sculptured arm thrust heavenwards and clenching a cigarette, After 2005 - Before 2012 is the product of a collaboration between Lucas and creative director Olu Michael Odukoya. Its innovative design accentuates the formal qualities of Lucas's sculpture, combining predominantly black and white photographs of her work punctuated with occasional colour images.
The book has been interleaved with short interviews between Lucas and curators, writers, artists and friends who have closely followed her career. By turns incisive, comic and poignant, these exchanges combine into unprecedented insight into her art and life. A lyrical essay by Angus Fairhurst (1966-2008) written about Lucas in 1995 serves as an epilogue.
After 2005 - Before 2012, the 26th book to be produced by Sadie Coles HQ under the imprint SCHQ, will be launched on 1st December to coincide with SITUATION CLASSIC PERVERY, the latest exhibition at Lucas's year-long project space SITUATION at 4 New Burlington Place, London, above Sadie Coles. The event will feature a discussion between Sarah Lucas and Olu Michael Odukoya chaired by Gregor Muir, director of the ICA.
Sarah Lucas (b.1962) is one of Britain's foremost contemporary artists. After 2005 - Before 2012 brings the record of her practice up to date following the publication in 2005 of a substantial catalogue raisonné. Over the last seven years she has redefined many of her enduring concerns - including representations of gender, slapstick visual puns, biomorphic objects, nature, and the notion of Englishness.
After 2005 - Before 2012 traces the development of several important series of work - including Penetralia(2008-10), sculptures responding to the Suffolk countryside where Lucas works, featuring plaster casts of found flints and penises in the style of fertility totems; NUDS (begun in 2009), consisting of nylon tights stuffed
with fluff and fashioned into ambiguous bodily forms; and diverse bodies of work arising from a residency in New Zealand (2010), and from exhibitions at the Museum of Cycladic Art, Athens (2010), Kunsthalle Krems (2011; with artists Gelatin) and the Anahuacalli Museum, Mexico City (2012).
After 2005 - Before 2012 (Koenig Books / Sadie Coles HQ, London, 2012), £45. ISBN 978-3-86335-182-3. Review copies available on request.
