Nabuqi (b. 1984, Inner Mongolia, China) graduated from the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 2013, and currently lives and works in Beijing. Nabuqi’s practice investigates what we perceive to be real, questioning the psychological nature of human engagement with objects and materials. Working with predominantly handmade sculpture and readymades, she invites the viewer to participate in the context of her work, urging them to be attuned with, and reflect upon, where her elaborate installations sit on the spectrum of the artificial to the actual. Playing with spatial politics, Nabuqi creates new realms by manipulating fields of vision in order to question the accepted role of the observer. By transforming familiar motifs of nature and domesticity the artist encourages a gentle awareness of ‘presence’ while challenging and disrupting established perceptions, creating a space for comfortable contemplation and critical reflection.
